Box Breathing

This exercise incorporates a kinesthetic component that helps increase focus and attention span.

  • Touch your hand just above the joint where the thumb connects to your hand

  • Draw a line with your finger to the base of your pointer finger and stop. This is the inhale for a count of four. (could add a physiological sigh here) (sometimes cued with the word extra or sniff)

  • While continuing to keep contact with your hand draw a line with your finger to the base of your pinky finger and stop. This is where you hold your breath for a count of four.

  • While continuing to keep contact with your hand draw a line down to just above the joint where your hand connects to your wrist and push gently into your hand on the count of four

  • Then draw a line to the place on your hand where you started as the count continues to eight and stop. This is the exhale for a count of eight. If the lines, you traced on your hand where visible they should resemble a square box.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor
If either of them falls down, one can help them up
But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
